VIC POWER DEAD AT 78
The days after Thanksgiving leading up to Christmas are generally joyous but this year the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society learned with great sadness that cancer had taken the life of Vic Power.
Power was one of the most popular reunion guests. He always had many stories to tell and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He entered the major leagues with the Philadelphia A’s in 1954 after coming to the A’s in a multi-player deal with the Yankees. Although first base was where he played most of his career, he could also play other infield and outfield positions as well. He won several gold gloves at first base. Power was the last Philadelphia A’s player left in the majors, still playing in 1965. Aside from Philadelphia and Kansas City, he also played for Cleveland, Minnesota, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies and California with a lifetime batting average of .284.
Vic Power was one of the best dressed and most sociable men to represent the A’s. He made two visits to the A’s Society reunions and was well received by fans and fellow players.
The Philadelphia A’s Historical Society extends it deepest condolence to the family of Vic Power.
