Gus Zernial |
|
Gus “Ozark Ike” Zernial began his Major League career in 1949 with the Chicago White Sox, came to the Philadelphia Athletics in a 1951 trade, and immediately paid big dividends for the team. He won the American League home run (33) and RBI (129) crowns that year, becoming the first A’s player to do so since Jimmie Foxx in 1933. He continued to put up impressive numbers for the A’s, driving in over 100 RBIs in 1952-53 and blasting out 42 home runs in 1953. Zernial was popular with Philadelphia fans for his slugging feats and he liked the inviting left field bleachers of Shibe Park. When the Athletics moved to Kansas City after the 1954 season, Zernial went along, and he finished his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1959. He currently lives in California and is Director of Community Development of the Fresno Grizzlies, a Triple-A Baseball Club.
