ANDY
SEMINICK DIES AT 83
By Max Silberman
Throughout the years, the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society
has included many Phillies players, especially 1950 "Whiz Kids"
at the annual reunion. Among them was popular Phillies catcher Andy
Seminick who came from his home
in Florida to the delight of fans in attendance.
Seminick was the Phillies catcher for 12 seasons, spending 3 seasons
with the Cincinnati Reds. He remained in baseball as a college coach
and performing a number of duties with the Phillies as a coach and
catching instructor.
Some interesting trivia notes: Seminick was the first Phillies
player to hit two home runs in one inning (1949) and shared the
same birthday (September 12) with fellow Whiz Kids Stan Lopata and
the late Bubba Church.
Andy Seminick was a warm and friendly man who was loved by fans
and team-mates. His passing leaves no surviving members of the starting
eight position players on the 1950 National League Champions who
remain legends in Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society extends its condolences
to the Seminick family on the loss of one of the nicest guys to
wear a Phillies uniform.
