Long before Charlie Finley moved our A's from Kansas City
to California, Connie Mack beat him to the punch. In
this rare 1942 photo, the Philadelphia Athletics 1942 spring
training team is shown posing in front of the main entrance
to San Quenton prison in California. Mack had taken
the team to Anaheim in earlier years for training and as was
his usual procedure, arranged games with local prisons.
Not included in the photo are Sam Chapman & Al Brancato who
were in the Armed Services at that time. Clearly visible
are Dick Fowler, Elmer Valo, Phil Marchildon, Russ Christopher,
Pete Suder and of course, Mr. Mack. Can you name any
of the others?
(Although it's not visible in this copy, the management of
the prison pulled out all stops including a large banner that
said, "Welcome Philadelphia Athletics.") |
