Garry Maddox |

Garry Maddox, long known as the "Secretary of Defense" for his coverage of center field, came to the Phillies from the Giants in May 1975 in a trade for Willie Montanez and sparkled for the locals for the next eleven years. A timely hitter who had a .285 lifetime average, including his three-plus seasons with San Francisco, Garry peaked with a .330 mark in the Phillies' division-leading season of 1976. His tenth-inning double drove in the winning run in the pennant-clinching fifth game of the 1980 playoff with Houston, and it was only fitting that Garry caught the fly ball which snuffed out the Astros' chances. With all of his batting prowess, it was for his glovework that Garry was best known. Perhaps Ralph Kiner summed it up best when he said, "Two-thirds of the earth is covered with water, and the other third is covered by Garry Maddox."
