EDDIE
MAYO, 96
by Max Silberman
Eddie Mayo was the 8th oldest living major leaguer when he passed
away on November 28th, 2006 at the age of 96. His niece, Karen Poydenis
informed the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society of his passing
and noted that he was a wonderful gentleman and fine player who
was much loved by his family. He was born Edward Joseph Mayoski
but was known in baseball as Eddie Mayo. He played third base for
the Athletics in 1943 and was a fine defensive infielder who could
also play second base and shortstop. In his rookie year with the
New York Giants in 1936 he played in the World Series as he later
did as a member of the World Champion 1945 Detroit Tigers. He also
played for the Boston Braves. He played several seasons for the
Tigers in the mid and late 1940s. After his playing career, he coached
including stints with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Philllies.
By all accounts Eddie Mayo was a man who loved the game of baseball
and was always a credit to the game.
The Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society extends it deepest
condolences to the family.
Eddie Mayo's passing leaves 70 surviving Philadelphia Athletics.
