Clifford Cravath |
|
Clifford "Gavvy" Cravath was unsuccessful in tryouts with three American League teams in 1908-09 before returning to the minors, where he developed into a feared slugger. When several teams claimed him, the Phillies won the rights to the 31-year-old outfielder in 1912. And what a prize he was! In nine seasons in Baker Bowl, the right-handed power hitter led the National League in home runs six times, in runs batted in twice, and even in outfield assists three times. In 1915 his 24 home runs and 115 RBIs led the Phils to their first pennant. When he retired in 1920, Gavvy's career 119 home runs was the all-time record, though it was soon broken by Babe Ruth. Gavvy, also known as "Cactus," managed the last-place Phillies in 1919 and 1920, before returning to his native California, where he died in 1963.
