Hammer 'Power-Laden' Yankees, 8-6; In
Season Finale, Ditmar Gains First Victory New York, N.Y. Sunday, September 26, 1954
Rookie hurler Art Ditmar had to wait until the season finale to record his first major league victory. Earlier this season, he narrowly missed gaining a win in his first start -- against the Red Sox in Philadelphia. In that game, manager Eddie Joost pulled Ditmar after seven innings with the Athletics leading 4-2. Joost promised the young pitcher, "We're going to take you out and get you your first win." It wasn't meant to be. After Ditmar's exit, Boston rallied for the win. . . . Yankee manager Casey Stengel went with a power-laden, if unorthodox, lineup featuring Yogi Berra at third, Mickey Mantle at short, and Bill Skowron at second. Collectively, the three infielders handled nineteen chances, with only an error by Skowron marring their efforts. . . . Rookie of the Year candidate Jim Finigan closed out the season with a .302 average. He entered the game at an even .300 and singled in his first at bat before giving way to Pete Suder. . . . In what is likely to be his final appearance playing in an Athletics' uniform, Joost collected 3 hits in 4 at bats. . . . The Athletics' future in Philadelphia remains in doubt. Connie Mack and his two sons have indicated they will sell the club if season attendance fails to top 400,000. Chicago millionaire Arnold Johnson continues to make a strong bid for the team. If Johnson is successful, he is expected to relocate the Athletics to Kansas City.
