Honors to Hall of Fame A's Greats

United Postal Service Representatives, Paul Smith,
Public Affairs & Communications Manager, Devra Jamison, Retail
Sales Specialist, Frank Schuhl, Hatboro Postmaster, & Larry
Hennesey, Hatboro Postal Supervisor, A's Society General Manager,
Ernie Montella and Michael Fesnak, Society Stamp Committee Chairman,
arranged a special ceremony that honored the 4 Philadelphia Athletics
Greats depicted in the Postal Service's July 7th, 2000, release
of the Legends of Baseball set of 20 commemorative stamps.
Presentations were held at the A's Society Museum/Library/Gift
Shoppe 6 North York Road, Hatboro, PA on Saturday, July 29th at 10:00AM. |

| On hand were relatives of three of the four honorees.
Jimmie Foxx's daughter, Nanci Foxx Canaday of Sumterville, Florida accepted
the award for her father. Eddie Collins' son, Eddie, Jr. of Kenneth Square,
Pennsylvania accepted on his father's behalf. Lefty Grove's grandson,
Richard Monnett of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Grove's great grandchildren,
Mark Monnett and Nicky Monnett Draheim, also from Hagerstown, Maryland,
were on hand to receive the honor for Lefty. David Jordan, A's Society
President, accepted the Mickey Cochrane award on behalf of the Cochrane
family. The Postal Service also presented each recipient, a framed
20 stamp set of the Legends of Baseball to commemorate the occasion. |

An enlargement of each stamp was presented to the
A's Society Museum and will be on permanent display in the Museum
section. David Jordan A's Society President, and Michael Fesnak,
A's Society Chairman Commemorative Stamp Committee, accepted on
behalf of the Philadelphia A's Society.

this beauty in 1967, just a few blocks away at Jarrett Dodge. |

| Lefty Grove (Back of stamp inscription) One of the finest
left-handed pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball. Lefty
Grove went 31-4 for the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics. In the process,
he put together a 16-game winning streak. |

| Mickey Cochrane (Back of stamp inscription) Mickey Cochrane
sparked the Philadelphia Athletics' championship teams of 1929-1931 with
his potent bat, skill behind the plate, and fierce, competitive spirit.
|

| Eddie Collins (Back of stamp inscription) Eddie "Cocky"
Collins played the game of baseball for 25 season, a 20th century record
for nonpitchers. His brilliant baserunning and batting helped four
teams win World Championships. |

| Jimmie Foxx (Back of stamp inscription) One of the top
Major League Baseball sluggers of all time. Jimmie Foxx hit 30 or more
home runs for 12 seasons in a row. Foxx won the Triple Crown for
the Philadelphia Athletics in 1933, leading the American League in home
runs, batting, and RBI's. |
