| At the breakfast
reunion on October 22, 2000, Society president Dave Jordan
announced the results of the balloting by members and friends of the
A’s Society for the All-Philadelphia A’s team. With the many Hall
of Famers in Philadelphia Athletics’ history, many of the positions
were not heavily contested, but there were a few close races. The
top vote getter of all was Robert Moses “Lefty” Grove, considered
by many authorities to be the greatest pitcher of all time. The results
are as follow:
First
base: Jimmie Foxx, with Ferris Fain second.
Second
base: Eddie Collins, with Pete Suder second.
Shortstop:
Eddie Joost in a landslide, with Jack Barry a runner-up.
Third base: Frank “Home Run” Baker in a close contest with
Jimmy Dykes second.
Outfield: Al Simmons, Sam Chapman, and Gus Zernial, with
Elmer Valo, Bob Johnson, and Wally Moses as backups.
Catcher:
Mickey Cochrane, followed by Buddy Rosar and Joe Astroth.
Left-handed
pitcher: Lefty Grove, Bobby Shantz, and Eddie Plank, with Rube
Waddell close behind and Lou Brissie next.
Right-handed
pitcher: Chief Bender, George Earnshaw, and Jack Coombs, followed
by Eddie Rommel and Phil Marchildon.
Manager:
Connie Mack (surprise!).
There they are. We want to thank all who helped us out by casting
their ballots, and we would be happy to stack up our all-time team
against that for any other big league franchise.
