Mike Fesnak, chairman of the
Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society's advisory committee to
promote the Connie Mack Commemorative Stamp project, is in the process
of gathering petitions in support of a commemorative stamp to honor
Connie Mack and his Philadelphia Athletics baseball team . The year
2002 marked the 100th anniversary of Mr. Mack's first of nine American
League Championships, and the beginning of a career that led Mr.
Mack straight to Cooperstown and his induction into the baseball
Hall of Fame.
The 8 member advisory committee
also includes, U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum (both
of Pennsylvania) and Connie Mack lll (of Florida, and Grandson of
Mr. Mack) A's Society President, David Jordan, and three local area
postmasters, Francis J. Schuhl, (Hatboro), Charles M. Stasen Jr.
(Worcester), and Dennis Huston, (Warminster).
The A's Historical Society,
through this committee, is recommending that a postage stamp be
issued in honor of Connie Mack, manager of the Philadelphia Athletics
American League Baseball Club between 1901-1950, and who today,
is still considered to be one of the true founding pioneers of Major
League baseball.
Connie Mack, 45 years after
the A's left Philadelphia, still commands the respect and adulation
of sports fans and celebrities from all walks of life. His own personal
record of managing 9 American League pennants and 5 World Series
Championships teams, labels his A's franchise as "Philadelphia's
Most Successful Pro Sports Franchise." "Not
only was Mr. Mack an astute manager, but is widely and fondly recalled
today by legions of sports fans and more than 100 of his former
players as a highly moral man, a devoted family man and a shining
example and role model to all he encountered" said Fesnak.
"The American League celebrated
it's 100th anniversary in the year 2000 and will then launch a series
of Anniversary Celebrations in the years to follow. We think that
honoring Mr. Mack, one of the league's great pioneers, would be
both timely and very appropriate" he added.
